Beach ride turns fatal for British tourist

October 07 2006 at 11:28AM

A 36-year-old British tourist drowned at Wave Crest beach, Cedane, in Queenstown, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.

Claire Jackson, from London, and two other women were riding horses along the shore at 6pm on Friday when a heavy current swept them out to sea, said Superintendent Gcinikaya Taleni.

"Her two colleagues managed to swim to safety. She, unfortunately, could not manage and drowned," said Taleni.

"Her horse was found alive, but the other two horses are still missing. We are still searching for the other two horses."

Taleni said Jackson's family in the United Kingdom had been informed of the incident.

One of the other women, Julie Gower, was from the Eastern Cape, while the other, known as Lindsey, was also from the UK. - Sapa
